The Crickett Black Laminate Compact 22 LR is chambered in .22 Long Rifle and built with a black laminate stock over a blued steel 16.1 inch barrel. It’s $179 and in stock. Buy it online and pick it up from your local FFL dealer.
What you get with the Crickett Black Laminate Compact 22 LR
It’s a single shot bolt action that has to be cocked by hand after the bolt closes. The rebounding firing pin stays blocked until then. For a first rifle, that slow loading routine is a feature, since it builds the habit of treating every shot on purpose.
Length of pull is 12 inches, which suits most young shooters, it weighs about 3 pounds and it comes with iron sights and a receiver drilled and tapped for an optics rail. One takedown screw under the stock holds the barreled action in, which makes cleaning simple.
Bluing is the classic finish on a .22. Wipe it with a lightly oiled rag after a wet day and it stays in good shape for years.
The .22 LR cartridge
A .22 LR costs a few cents per round and barely moves the rifle when it fires. Kids can shoot a whole box without flinching, and it’s plenty for small game and tin cans. Wikipedia has a good .22 Long Rifle history, and SAAMI publishes the chamber drawings.

Fitting the Crickett Black Laminate Compact 22 LR
A rifle that’s too long is the most common reason kids struggle. With the stock in the shoulder, the child should reach the trigger with the first pad of the finger and keep the elbow bent. Crickett’s short length of pull is what makes that possible for small arms.
Is the Crickett Black Laminate Compact 22 LR right for you?
We see the Crickett Black Laminate Compact 22 LR go to:
- Adults who want a light trapping or camp gun
- Parents buying a first rifle for a child
- Grandparents who want to start a grandkid shooting
An adult should always supervise a young shooter. The NSSF firearm safety page has free material for teaching kids the basics.
Keeping it in good shape
Cleaning is easy. Remove the one takedown screw under the stock, lift out the barreled action, run a cleaning rod from the breech and wipe everything with a light oil. Store it unloaded with the bolt open or removed.
