What you get with the Crickett 722 Sporter Compact
Crickett built the 722 as a step up from the single shot. You get a 7 round detachable magazine with stainless steel feed lips, a cock on open bolt with a 50 degree throw and a light trigger of about 2 pounds.
Crickett also calls it the Compact Sporter. It’s the rifle for a young shooter who has outgrown the single shot: light, short (16.25 inch barrel, 11.5 inch length of pull) and good for small game, ranch chores and club matches.
The blued barrel has the traditional look. Keep a light coat of oil on it and store it dry.
.22 LR in the Crickett 722 Sporter Compact
The .22 Long Rifle is the cheapest and quietest common cartridge, with almost no recoil. That’s why most people learn to shoot with one. It’s also good for squirrels, rabbits and plinking out to about 75 yards. Wikipedia has a good .22 Long Rifle history, and SAAMI publishes the chamber drawings.

Getting the fit right
Because the 722 is a repeater, teach magazine handling from day one: magazine out, bolt open, chamber checked. The short 1.6 inch bolt travel makes reloading fast once that routine is solid.
Is the Crickett 722 Sporter Compact right for you?
The Crickett 722 Sporter Compact is a good fit for:
- Rimfire match shooters
- Ranch and farm pest control
- Teens who have outgrown a single shot
Supervise young shooters every time. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has a helpful safety resource page for families.
Care and storage
After a range day, run a few patches through the bore from the breech end and wipe the metal down. Store the rifle unloaded and locked, with the ammo kept somewhere else. A cable lock through the open action is cheap and works.
