Inside the Crickett 722 Varmint
The 722 is the Crickett for shooters who’ve outgrown a single shot. It’s a bolt action repeater with a 7 round self-retaining snap lock magazine with stainless steel feed lips, a short 5 inch receiver with 1.6 inches of bolt travel and a cock on open bolt.
This Varmint model has a walnut thumbhole stock and a 20 inch 4140 target barrel with 12 lands and grooves and a 1:16 right hand twist. It uses a target chamber, so the maker says not to shoot Stinger ammo in it.
The blued barrel has the traditional look. Keep a light coat of oil on it and store it dry.
What’s in the Crickett 722 Varmint box
- Simmons 3-9x40mm scope
- Bipod
Everything in the box is ready to go together, so you don’t need to shop for rings or mounts. Zero the scope at 25 or 50 yards with the ammo you plan to shoot, then confirm it on a target before hunting.
The .22 LR cartridge
.22 Long Rifle ammo is cheap, easy to find and mild to shoot. It’s the standard for teaching, backyard plinking at a safe range and small game hunting. For the technical side, see the SAAMI cartridge drawings or the .22 LR article on Wikipedia.

Sizing the Crickett 722 Varmint
Because the 722 is a repeater, teach magazine handling from day one: magazine out, bolt open, chamber checked. The short 1.6 inch bolt travel makes reloading fast once that routine is solid.
Who the Crickett 722 Varmint is for
The Crickett 722 Varmint is a good fit for:
- Ranch and farm pest control
- Teens who have outgrown a single shot
- Adults who want a light, accurate squirrel rifle
Supervise young shooters every time. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has a helpful safety resource page for families.
Keeping it in good shape
Rimfire ammo is dirty, so clean the bore every few hundred rounds and wipe the bolt face. Store the rifle unloaded in a case or safe. Teach the shooter to check the chamber every time they pick it up.
